REFLECTIONS

Experience

Many things were new to me during my first semester at BDCM, and Typography was my most time-consuming module. However, as much as each endeavour demanded my time and work, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Each project provided me with the opportunity to study new parts of typography, and by completing each task, I was able to increase my abilities and learning experience and apply them to my work to develop and improve the quality of my tasks. Furthermore, the weekly input from my lecturer, Mr Vinod, was really helpful in my design and working process, particularly in the details. His input kept me on track throughout the 14 weeks of this semester by assisting me in recognising the correct approach to the design objectives of each assignment. I also appreciated how my lecturer encouraged us to exhibit our individuality in our designs, and how I was able to freely explore my style through the assigned projects. Overall, this module provided me with numerous opportunities to learn about typography, and I thoroughly loved each learning opportunity throughout the weeks. I love being able to gain relevant knowledge about typography and want to put it to use.

Observation

Throughout the 14 weeks of this module, paying attention to details was a crucial point of development for me. I discovered that every detail applied to each part contributes to the overall harmony of my designs. This was also my opportunity to learn more about Adobe products and functions that I was unfamiliar with prior to commencing this subject, particularly how to aid myself with the guidelines and measurements that keep the design consistent. I also appreciated seeing how other students approached the same given issue in a completely different style of design for each project; this gave me the opportunity to learn about different interesting points of view and I appreciate people's differences.

Findings

Before I began working with typography, I assumed it would be a straightforward subject to master. However, after 14 weeks of it, I've discovered that typography is not only a challenging subject, but also one that requires you to be observant and truly understand your design strategy before just executing it. Besides that, I also discovered that the design process is just as important as the end product; it helps us discover and approach the objectives in new ways, and it allows us to experiment with different variation versions of Typography design. I also realised that in order to create an engaging design, we need a solid foundation of basic typographic knowledge, particularly the historical development and terminology that allow us to improve the quality of our work. Finally, I am grateful for my weekly learnings and would like to learn and explore more about typography.
