INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

Mr. Asrizal, our lecturer, gave us a briefing on information pertaining to our project 1 during our first and second week of classes. The general theme is “Cultural Sensitivity In Design”. For his assignment, students can select any culture; however, those who are going on a field trip to Osaka, Japan, need to select a Japanese culture. In week two, students might begin to consider a few preliminary concepts before forming groups with other students. This is a group assignment that will require five to six students per group, and our professor will assign us to groups. In addition, Ms. Noranis gave us lessons using lecture slides that covered the subject of "Culture & Design." & “Culture, Design & Research.

Below are the lecture slides taught by Ms Noranis.

Week 1 : Culture & Design

Week 2 : Culture, Design & Research

PROJECT 1

Proposal ( Week 1- 3 )

We're going to "frame" our study inside the selected theme and investigate a cultural phenomena or a specific subculture that is seen as "sensitive. The general theme is “Cultural Sensitivity In Design”.

It is necessary that we communicate this cultural aspect in a way that is both presentable and enhances viewers' understanding while maintaining the accuracy of the facts. We should come up with some rough concepts for applying design language to graphically represent our interpretation. Each concept must have a brief explanation.  It is advised that we carry out visual study to broaden the scope of our idea's generation.

Idea Proposed

After discussions with my group members, We came to the decision to pick “Kabuki” as the title for our project. In order to better comprehend Kabuki for our idea, we are conducting more research on it. We've also been talking about some initial concepts for the project's output, such as a comic, folding fan, Kabuki makeup filter, and emotion package.

Following that, we began using Canva to create our proposal slides. Below are the subtopics covered in the presentations and the names for who’s working on which subtopics/ slides.

  • Interpretation of theme - Sue Zhiun
  • Introduction - Charmine
  • Problem Statement - Kerly
  • Research Questions & Objectives - Kerly
  • History of Kabuki - Isabelle
  • Make up, costumes, props of Kabuki - Kelly
  • Sketches / Visual References - Kelly & Sue Zhiun

PROJECT 2

Field Study ( Week 4-5 )

Data Collection methods :

For observation study, we went to Dontonburi, Shinsaibashi, Osaka Musuem of Housing and Living & Kyoto. We found items related to Kabuki and we took pictures of those and decided to used those items as an inspiration for our last project.

  • Online Research
We did research about online collections of Kabuki-themed stickers and emoticons, while also exploring into Hari Raya customs and traditions as essential research for crafting emojis to honour the occasion.
We created a survey with questions about Kabuki using Google Forms. We then posted the survey link on our Instagram story so that our friends or families could help us to fill up the form.

Below are the data analysis conducted by one of my teammates, Sue Zhiun.

After finalising the data, we then moved on to our slides for presentation. Each of us were given jobs to do for the slides. The subtopics covered in our presentations are listed below:

1. Research Questions - Kerly
2. Research Objectives - Kerly
3. Data Collection methods
  • Observations at Japan - Charmine & Isabelle
  • Online Research ( Emojis & Hari Raya ) - Kelly
  • Google Form Survey - Sue Zhiun
4. Kabuki's way of expressing emotions - Kerly
5. Ideas on Final product - Kerly
6. Conclusions - Kerly

PROJECT 3

Visual Design ( Week 5-8 )

We were to utilise the data collected from our research trip, and produce visual design outcomes that reflect the interpretation and definition of "Framing", and also to consider cultural and aesthetic aspects, balanced with our design knowledge. Various directions & approaches can be engaged in, such as experimental design/art with the use of manual/digital or combination of both media.

As our final project, we're making "Kabuki Eid Emojis," which are amusing and inspiring stickers that combine the concepts of Kabuki and Hari Raya. Using a variety of methods, including digital and manual art, we're taking cultural and aesthetic considerations into account during the design process. These stickers are ideal for conveying feelings and wishing people a happy holidays on Hari Raya.

The subtopics covered in our presentations are listed below:

1. Concepts - Isabelle
2. Target Audiences - Charmine
3. Sketches - Kelly
4. Progress ( AdobeI Illustrator - AI) - Sue Zhiun & Kerly
5. Final emoji / sticker pack - Kerly
6. Final output & Rationale - Sue Zhiun, Kelly
7. E-portfolio link

REFLECTION

I have discovered numerous things about the value of cultural sensitivity and understanding in design as a result of my experience in the intercultural design course. Throughout the course, I developed a deeper awareness of diverse cultural viewpoints and considerations when approaching design tasks.

The importance of carrying out in-depth research and incorporating cultural insights into the design process was one of the course's key takeaways.  Understanding symbolism, colour meanings, or culturally particular communication styles are just a few examples of how these things can have a big impact on how well a design is received.
