REFLECTIONS
Experience
For the past 14 weeks of Advanced Typography, I've learnt a lot and worked on several challenging assignments. In task one, we explored several typographic systems and developed letterforms based on an image. This helped me learn how different type systems affect design and how to integrate text and graphics. Task 2 involves creating key artwork and collateral, such as totebag and T-shirts. I learnt how to create a clean and attractive wordmark. Task 3 enquired me to build a full typeface and use it in real-life situations. Overall, it was a pleasant experience as I have learned and created many interesting designs such as my typeface and logo. It has been an fun adventure and I hope to use typography in the future again.
Observation
Throughout the tasks, witnessing my seniors' and classmates' outstanding concepts generated inspiration and frequently drove me to rework areas of my work that I was dissatisfied with. I learnt the need of consulting references to overcome creative barriers. Initially, I saw references as a last choice, but I've discovered that they assist create more ideas than I could come up with on my own.
Findings
In Advanced Typography, I learnt the importance of colour selection in Task 2, which has a significant influence on the appeal of designs, particularly for collateral. Good colour selections and contrasts improve the overall design quality. In addition, I learnt essential After Effects skills while animating my logo and typography. During Task 1, I realised that working on designs I disliked was ineffective. Instead, starting again with a free head allows me to avoid restricting my creativity.
