INSTRUCTIONS
Task 3:
This project is in collaboration with our team and the SBS. The food products to be developed by students will require packaging designs. We would be tasked to create new packaging design for these collaborative products.
TASKS
Our group was assigned to work with students from the School of Biosciences to develop a packaging design for a product they produced. My group, Group 5, comprises Charmine, Yu Qing, and myself. At the start of the process, we were to select a group and their product in which we would be interested in working with. We have selected a healthier, tastier and more affordable cup noodle with a collagen-rich soup base.
Then, we attended a presentation by the group we chose the following week as they presented their cup noodle product. After that, we get started with the concept, we proposed two concepts through the PPT presentation of SBS students.
Art Direction
Concept 01 Natural Style
(Emphasize the concept of health and natural ingredients)
Theme: Mascot + Minimalism
Use warm yellow and green as the primary colors, combined with hand-drawn illustrations of pumpkin and chicken.
Below are some of the Visual reference.

Concept 02 Noodle Splash Concept
(Capture the essence of the cup noodle product with a lively splash effect)
Theme: Minimalism
Design Elements: A large bowl of noodles, with noodles spilling out or swirling. On top, a mini icon of a pumpkin and a chick appears, as if “surfing” on the waves of noodles.
Visual reference are as below.

Colour
The color we chose to use is #FDF9E8 (Soft Off-White), #F26F35 (Rich Pumpkin Orange), #F79421 (Golden Orange),#F3D962 (Soft Yellow),#F9DB9D (Light Creamy Beige).
Typeface
At first, we have research about 7 different typefaces for the brand name as well as the subtitle body text.
After discussing with SBS, they liked the natural style of Concept 01, the minimalism of the theme and the mascot.
Final Concept
Glowlicious's packaging embraces a creative blend of playful and engaging graphical icons. The design takes inspiration from cultural roots while infusing a fresh, youthful charm that resonates with health-conscious consumers and appeals to the Gen Z audience.
The packaging emphasizes wellness and vitality, with vibrant and relatable graphics that visually communicate the brand's dedication to delivering both health benefits and deliciousness. The warm color palette and playful illustrations create a friendly experience absolutely in line with the innovation and nutrition value of the product.
Packaging Design
Sketch - Mascot Ilustration
Digitisation - Mascot Ilustration
We digitized the best 7 Mascots and sent them to SBS for selection.

They chose the 6th one. So we moved on to the next step, which was the packaging layout.
Sketch - Packaging Layout
Digitisation - Packaging Layout
After we had the idea, we started to digitise. First, there will be the Rules of Food Packaging & Labelling in Malaysia on the packaging.
1. Logo
2. Brand
3. Mascot
4. Barcode
5. Cooking Instructions
6. Warnings/Precautions
7. Nutritional Information
8. Ingredients
9. Instructions
Before choosing the packaging layout for SBS, we got feedback in class. The overall layout was OK, but the brand name "GLOWLICIOUS" was not visible, and it was not noticeable in the layout.
In response to this problem, we made improvements. We had two designs, and we let SBS make the decision. They chose the #2, so we added the improved brand name design to our layout.
For the cup noodle lid, the first design was chosen.
The lid of the first design looks clear and concise, while highlighting the brand's main visual elements - pumpkin and chicken. In this design, pumpkin and chicken are eating noodles, which adds fun and storytelling, and can quickly attract consumers' attention. The overall design is not too complicated, visually easy to understand, and meets the functional requirements of product packaging, so that people can associate the theme and deliciousness of the product at a glance.
Our SBS client picked layout #4 for its balanced overall design and clear, organized presentation of information. This layout effectively displays all necessary details, such as the ingredient list, brand elements, and illustrations, in a visually accessible way. It meets consumers' needs for quick information retrieval while maintaining the brand's consistency and charming, playful style.
This week, we were asked to have the final design in color and a real sample of the cup noodles next week. So we printed the final design of the cup noodles and prepared real samples.

After we cut out the final design of the cup noodles in class, we found that the size error between the printed design and the real object, the font seen on the screen during the design may be clear, but when it is actually printed on the cup noodles packaging, due to the influence of the curved surface and the scaling, the font appears smaller and difficult to read. When the packaging of the package is curved, not flat. If the curvature of the cup noodles is not taken into account during the design, the font will be skewed or deformed after the curved printing. When the flat packaging paper is attached to the arc of the cup noodles, the paper will be pulled or bent, causing the font and pattern position to deviate. Moreover, the cup noodles packaging is not a straight cylinder, but a conical structure that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.
Through these, we can adjust above problems by using different layouts, print out, check whether the layout of finished product is slanted, adjust in time. The teacher also suggested that we could print in black and white first, then print it in color after checking the layout of the finished product is right.
We were asked to prepare slides for the branding and packaging presentation to present our results to our SBS clients. Below are our presentation slides.
After we presented our work to the SBS partners, they told us that the chicken on the lid and the cup body were in different colors and people might think they are different types.
So we made improvement on the lid. Below are the final version of the lid for cup noodle.

FEEDBACK
Week 9
Exercises :
Specific feedback : Miss agrees that the illustration in this ( our final look) in comparison with the other looks better however we need to work on the layout( with all the information)
- Apply your design principle knowledge
Specific feedback : Miss liked how we did the layout on the cup and it looks fine, she also mentioned that the mascot (main logo and instructions) applied is cute and suits the brand.
General feedback : Prepare a packaging prototype and prepare proposal slides for the SBS student presentation scheduled for Week 12.
Specific feedback :
- Try printing it on a normal material paper so it is soft enough to cut and fold with it.
- The layout is slightly off. Re-align all elements properly. After printing, fold the prototype and identify any issues with alignment, structural stability, and proper placement of information. Pay attention to how images and text align when folded.
Experience
In completing Task 3, I followed the whole process from conceptualization to final design. First was how to combine healthy and natural elements with a minimalist style in order to meet the expectation of SBS students from the packaging. After discussion with my team, we came up with two concepts and chose the natural-style design based on the mascot. This experience further developed my design skills while instilling in me the important appreciation for the value of teamwork and interdisciplinary communication.
Observation
Throughout the project, I learned how important it is to have a clearly defined visual theme and considerate color choices to portray the identity and message of a product. For example, warm yellow and green tones, along with hand-drawn illustrations of pumpkins and chicken, communicated health-focused and natural attributes of the product. Such design elements not only attracted the target audience but also enhanced the branding of the product.
Besides aesthetic considerations, there was the aspect of adhering to Malaysian food packaging and labeling regulations. This is where critical details such as the brand name, barcode, cooking instructions, and nutritional information should be displayed on the packaging. Having these correctly in place made the design professional and up to standards. The balance of creativity with regulatory requirements provided a holistic approach to the project, resulting in a design that was both visually appealing and functionally effective.
The most important thing that I learned from this project is the importance of the involvement of clients throughout the design process, which includes SBS students. The feedback sessions helped to refine our work and enable the enhancement in the visibility of the brand name and improving the layout. These greatly enhanced the appeal and functionality of the packaging to aesthetic and practical expectations.
What's more, I learned that attention to the tiny details matters for a premium output. For example, it took much time and effort to digitize the mascot and fine-tune the layout of the packaging, though these steps greatly affected the polish and professionalism of the design. The iterative nature of the design process came across much stronger in this project, and the opportunity to turn theoretical input into practical application was greatly enhanced. It showed that cooperation, flexibility, and precision are decisive factors in successful and effective design practice relevant to future projects.
