Task 03(A) | Book Printing

 INSTRUCTIONS

TASKS

We were told to use the content created in the previous assignment to compose a book for task 3A. The story along with 16  illustrations that will be used in my book is as follows:

Progression

I have decided on a book size of 230 x 180 mm in previous task. Then, I started to set up an InDesign document and made adjustments to the columns and margins. The settings are listed below.

After that, I moved on to putting in the contents, visuals and trying out with different layouts. Below are the two examples of the layouts. I tried to include visuals in most of the pages so that the content feels more lively and attractive. I also tried to incorporate images within the text to allow for an interactive feel in reading and to ensure that visuals support the content and relieve the density of text. Below are examples of four of the pages.

Book Printing | Week 10

In Week 10, I placed a printing order with Mummydesign Print. For the inner pages, I selected Simili paper (120gsm), while the cover was printed on Artcard paper (300gsm) with a velvet soft-touch lamination for a refined finish. I opted for Saddle Stitch Bookbinding to complete the look.

Choosing the right paper material for my book took some time since Mummydesign only accepts online orders. However, I'm pleased with the final result and how the print turned out.

The total printing cost was around Rm 67.

Specific feedback : The overall printed book looks good, the choice of paper is good and the quality and colours of the illustrations is there too.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

This is my first time printing a book that I wrote, and it is about family bonding. At first I thought that it will be a challenging process as I have never printed any book before but as it progresses I realised that it was a smooth and enjoyable learning experience. Seeing things come together has been a really satisfying experience. It has showed me that with the appropriate perspective and effort, anything that appears challenging can actually be manageable and achievable.

Observation

I discovered that layout details such as spacing, picture alignment, and typeface etc can be vital in enhancing the quality and readability of my work. Following the finalization of the general composition, I did kerning and tracking to provide consistency in reading without compromising harmony in the integrity of the design. I also realised that high-resolution illustration and consistent typography created a smooth flow, whereas the paper textures and their weights created a nice feeling and visually pleasing result.

Findings

I found that how a book is bound can either make or break the tone of a publication, adding that personalized touch that could give it so much more professionalism. The process was both enjoyable and educational since this was my first time publishing a book, hence giving valuable insight into my future work and projects.
