Exercise 1 : Audio Dubbing

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

Audio Dubbing

This task is an effective method to assess our level of sound design familiarity. In order to create a sense that we are watching the real movie, we had to voice-over the actors in the provided film and add sound effects and ambient noise. Even before achieving any of that, though, we also had to compile a breakdown sheet detailing every sound and event in the scenario. Each scene's specific time required to be included as well.

In week 3, we were divided into random groups of five or six people and required to collaborate in breaking down the video clip. We worked on the spreadsheet that my teammates and I had shared.

Final breakdown for my sound dubbing exercise is shown below.

Progresses:

Initially, I had to record the voice-over for the video. I used my phone to capture my voice while I had my laptop in front of me. I did my best to match the lips of the character with my voice. The voice-over attempts are displayed below.

Sound Shaping

In this exercise, we focused on shaping sound in a recording to make the audio appear as if it were in a specific environment. We recorded a 5-10 second audio clip and shaped the sound to create:

  • Voice of a phone call
  • Voice coming from inside a closet
  • Voice in a toilet/bathroom
  • Underground cave ambiance
  • Alien/Orc voice

REFLECTION

Sound Dubbing:

The initial excitement of identifying sound effects in the sound dubbing exercise gradually changed into an intensive trial-and-error procedure. The difficulty of continually looking for appropriate noises and matching them to the film highlighted the significance of patience and accuracy. However, the gratification of precisely synchronised audio and visual justified the effort, emphasising the importance of sound in narrative.

Sound Shaping:

The sound shaping experiment, which entailed modifying the way audio sounds in diverse surroundings, provided an original perspective by emphasising audio's transformational ability. Imagining sounds in unusual settings expanded my creative boundaries and improved my knowledge of sound design. This exercise was not only about making technical improvements, but also about immersing the listener in a realistic audio experience.
