TASK
In this task, I had to do an in-depth analysis of the artwork I had chosen from task 1 and visually analyse it. Visual analysis will allow you to explore the design principles inherent in that work, as well as the design's scale, placement, purpose, and effectiveness in relation to the UNSDG aim that you have chosen.
Back in Task 1, here's the artwork I chose:
Title of artwork : Colombe au soleil (Dove with Sun)
Artist Name: Pablo Picasso
Year: 1962
Medium: Colour Lithograph

Design Principle observed in the design :
- Contrast ( the use of colour and white space)
- Symbolism (the "dove")
- Emphasis (the sun)
- Movement / motion (the wing)
Phase One : Observation
This design is in horizontal (landscape) format.
The feartures of the artwork is a white dove portrayed in bold black lines, which is at the central of this poster. The dove is in flight, as its wings outstretched. The dove also carries an olive branch in its beak, symbolising peace and hope. Below the dove, there's an abstract black & white shapes or lines intersecting it. Positioned near the center of the composition, or above the dove. There's a bright yellow circle representing the sun, adding warmth and hope for the overall composition.

Phase Two : Analysis
This artwork features bold black lines that form the shape of a dove in flight. The dove's form is simple yet recognisable, emphasising the power of minimalistic design. The sharp contrast between the black lines of the dove and the white background creates visual impacts. For emphasis, the yellow sun adds a burst of colour, drawing attention to the center of the composition. Although the painting is not symmetrical, there's still a sense of visual balance achieved. For movement, the wings of the dove gives the impression that the dove is in motion, flying towards somewhere else. The yellow sun in the background adds warmth and optimism. White of the dove symbolises innocence and purity and for the black, the fighter jets and explosions conveys danger and chaos.

Phase Three : Interpretation
Picasso created this artwork during a period of global turmoil. It was 1952, a time marked by the Cold War, nuclear tensions, and ideological conflicts. The purpose of "Dove with Sun" was to convey a powerful message of peace and anti-war emotion as Picasso believed in the power of the art to inspire positive change. This artwork became an iconic symbol of the peace movement. The design's simplicity allows it to break through language barriers and draw attention to individuals all around the world. In summary, "Dove with Sun" serves as a timeless reminder that even in the darkest times, the pursuit of peace remains essential.

REFLECTION
Throughout the process of this project, I am delighted I gained a deeper understanding of the observation, analysis, and interpretation of the artwork I chose. I was able to learn more about the significance of incorporating design principles in our artwork and how they might influence our work. Furthermore, I learned that artists uses designs to express their ideas and feelings, as well as to visually interact with audiences.
