Task 3 : Design

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Module Information Booklet

TASK

After evaluating the design of our choosing in Task 2, we will have to produce a piece of design that is either inspired by or influenced by the one we had previously analysed. Applying design principles is also necessary. To communicate the visual message, we can use any materials or the medium.

My selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) is number 16, focusing on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Through my design, I aim to emphasize the importance and value of peace in our world. I believe that every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity, deserves to live free from the threat of violence in any form.

Sketches

Sketch 1 :

Fig 2.1 sketch #1 , Week 6

In sketch no.1, The central focus of the artwork is a human hand with both fingers open, representing the peace hand sign. Above the hand, there's a dove in flight. I included dove in my sketches because it is a powerful symbol of peace, hope and freedom. The wings are also spreading wide, suggesting freeing. The word "PEACE" is written in capital letters to reinforces the theme of my artwork.

The simplicity of the composition evokes a sense of purity and clarity.

Sketch 2 :

Fig 2.2 sketch #2 , Week 6

For sketch no.2, in the middle of the work there is a human hand transforming into feathers of a  birds / human hand and at the wrist part, it is transforming into the dove. The hand represents humanity, while the bird represents freedom. The dove also holds an olive branch in its beak, as olive also represents the universal symbol of peace and union. Near to the bottom, The hand gesture, which appears to be destroying the atomic bomb, represents the desire for peace and nonviolence.

Sketch 3 :

Fig 2.3 sketch #3 , Week 6

For sketch no.3, In the middle of this sketch there is a birdcage that represents restriction & control. Inside the cage, the atomic bomb's presence within the cage suggests both containment and danger. For the background, there are few birds or dove flying around the cage, representing the regain of freedom, escape or desire to break free. Broken Iron chain around the hand are to conveys the message of release and the olive branch beside the hands suggesting growth and life.

Design

Process :

Throughout the process of designing my illustration, I made some minor changes. These included refining the fonts, changing the colours, rearranging the components' positions and alignments, and refining the shapes of some of the elements. To ensure that the half-body human figure blends in with the rest of the composition, I rounded the corners of the figure to give it an integrated aspect.

Title of artwork : "Peaceful Pursuit"

Format : A4 size (JPEG)

Design Principles :Contrast, Movement, Emphasis, Figure/ Ground (hand sign) & Symbol

Rationale

This artwork titled "Peaceful Pursuit" poster dives into the UNSDG Goal 16 : Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions. It aims to promotes globally inclusive and accountable institutions, ensure universal access to justice, and advocate for peaceful and inclusive communities.

In this poster, there are several design principles that can be found, including Contrast, Movement, Emphasis & Figure/ Ground. For contrast, the background is solid blue, evoking calmness and stability. The use of white gradient for the dove and text contrasts with blue, drawing attention to these elements. Moreover, the text "Peace" & "Justice" are boldly written at the bottom centre, to supports the concept of the artwork. Movement is found in dove's wing as if is ready to fly away. Whereas, for emphasis it would be the central element which are the hand sign. Reflecting the Gestalt theory of figure/ground, the raised index and middle fingers, accompanied by a half-body human figure is to show justice and freedom as all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity, are to live free from fear and violence. Additionally, symbolic imagery such as the broken chain, white dove, and green olive branches enrich the artwork's narrative. The broken chain symbolizes liberation and the struggle for freedom, while the white dove and olive branches serve as universal symbols of peace.

FEEDBACK

Sketches

Specific feedback :  Among my three sketches, Ms. Yip commented that my sketch #1 has the most potential as the message is clear, well-delivered and the elements are quite cleverly blended together.

Illustration

Specific feedback : For the illustration section, Ms. Yip recommended using a plain background instead of a gradient background, considering the gradient effect already present in my doves. The choice of typeface was suitable and good use of design principles.
