Task 2 | Design Proposition

 INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 2 : Design Proposition (30%)

Students are to carry on from proposal development and continue to develop the final proposal with a comprehensive design proposition. It shall contain the curation of the production process while demonstrating resourcefulness and creativity in effectively channelling and managing resources and potential risks to drive solutions in complex and dynamic environments and/or contemporary real-world settings.

The design propositions need to be justified by the use of a variety of supporting evidence, making appropriate reference to information or analysis that significantly supports the points being made. Students are to demonstrate the culmination of your proposal on how your design solution effectively addresses a specific need in your targeted audience, utilizing a newly created product or service that brings unique social, cultural and/or economic value. The focus will be on your attention to detail and the successful execution of a wide range of conventions particular to your specific area of specialization including organization, content, presentation formatting, aesthetics and style.

TASK

Week 03 | Presentation Week

The presentation went smoothly, and we received confirmation to move forward, with a strong and well-defined problem statement in place.

Before we started to work together, we decided on the brand name, logo style, and colour palette.

First, we decide on the logo. We had voted for our brand name and brand styles. Below are the options we had.
  • AURA
  • ELAN
  • LUMI
  • NOIRE
  • VERA

After the voting process, the chosen brand name was AURA, reflecting the charm and confidence of women. For the visual style, we decided to go with an elegant, modern, and minimalist aesthetic.

In the meantime, we also look for visual references, colour palette. Below are the references of typeface and colour palette we found.

Week 04 | Consultation & Development

In Week 4, we focused on audience research, existing media analysis, ideation, concept development, and information design.

I created an online survey on Google Forms to collect data for researching the preferences and experience of sanitary products. Then, we distributed the questionnaire to the public to gather ideas and suggestions. From Week 4-5 , We had a total of 52 respondents participating in this data analysis.

During tutorial, we had a group consultation with Ms. Vitiyaa to discuss our project progress. We updated her on the survey we conducted, as well as the logo and colour palette we developed the previous week.

Initial Logo sketches

Logo | First attempt (Tyra)
Rejected Ideas: Uterus shape is not allowed due to Cultural Sensitivities & Taboos.

Logo | First attempt (Weehan)

After receiving feedback, we made necessary improvements and began designing the inner and outer packaging, merchandise, posters, and exhibition materials.

Week 05 | Concept Adjustments & Development

In Week 5, we held a meeting to assign specific roles to each group member:

Tyra: Logo and Inner Packaging
Wee Han: Outer Packaging and Advertising Video
Kerly: Merchandise and Exhibition
Charmine: Merchandise and Poster

We also discussed refining the design with a softer, more subtle colour palette to ensure the packaging appears discreet when placed on a table. Below are the second colour palette.

Besides that, we also created Mind map using Miro to compile our ideas, notes, and visual references all in one place. Here is the link.

After completing the Miro mind map, each of us proceeded with our assigned tasks. Wee Han began by working on the outer packaging design while Tyra worked on the inner packaging.

Initial Inner Packaging (Tyra)

Attempt #1

Since Charmine and I needed to wait for the logo and packaging to be finalized before starting our parts, we began by researching additional visual references and exploring ideas for merchandise.

We also discussed about what to pick as our merchandises. After discussion, we came up with 4 final merchandises. Below are the lists.

Merchandise

1.Pouches
2.Tote bags
3.vending machines
4.stickers

Visual References: Posters

Visual References: Totebag & Vending Machines

Visual References: Pimple patch & Pouch

During tutorial, we had a group consultation with Ms. Vitiyaa and Ms. Anis. After presenting our progress to Ms. Vitiyaa and Ms. Anis, we received valuable feedback regarding our colour choices. They pointed out that the green hue used in the outer packaging appeared sickly, as it is often associated with illness, making it unsuitable for a menstrual product. However, they agreed that the pink version was more appropriate. Ms. Anis suggested exploring more refreshing colours like blue, while Ms. Vitiyaa recommended using different colours on the inner packaging to differentiate the sizes of pads and tampons for easier identification. Overall, our direction and problem statement were clear and solid. We just needed to refine the colour scheme, especially given the sensitivity of the topic.

FINAL SUBMISSION

FEEDBACK

Week 4
Exercises :

Specific feedback :
  • For this week, we have created a survey to distribute to the public to get some ideas and suggestions.
  • We received feedback on our logo, and it was rejected. Concepts involving uterus shapes were also dismissed due to cultural sensitivities and taboos. We were advised to look for more references regarding potential colour palettes and sanitary pad packaging.
  • Miss Vitiyaa suggested that the packaging colour palette should be more fun and exciting, rather than using colours that resemble blood, as that might cause embarrassment when taking the product out.

Week 5
Exercises :

Specific feedback :
  • For our initial outer packaging, we explored three gradient colours. Miss Anis felt the green tone appeared sickly, while pink was seen as a better option. Both lecturers recommended using more refreshing colours like blue, and suggested different colours for the inner packaging to represent the three sizes of pads and tampons.
  • The direction and problem statement are already solid, just need to make sure that the colour schemes works. As we are touching on topic that are very sensitive.
